Chapter Six

“I’ll be back before the sit n’ knit,” Aggie said, as she slipped on her red coat.

“You’d better be.” Janet smiled from behind the store counter. “I know I normally say don’t rush back, but it would be my worst nightmare running today’s sit n’ knit. It will be a full house. I hope for Mason’s sake, he stays upstairs.”

“I did text him to remind him to make himself scarce.”

“Let’s hope he does.”

Aggie pulled on her gloves before she headed out the door. The winter sky hung heavy and low. By tonight, the rain would have returned.

Usually when on her lunch break, Aggie walked to wherever she needed to go, but today she drove. She had Klaus’s favorite pepperoni pizza to pick up and in the cold, it wouldn’t stay warm for long. Klaus had the day off and so she was repaying his dinner delivery from the other night with a lunchtime pizza feast.

With the aroma of pizza filling her car and making her mouth water, she pulled into Klaus’s driveway. Just as well she hadn’t sent Mason out jogging over this side of town. Even though it was midday and Klaus and his neighbors’ festive lights weren’t on, the street radiated seasonal cheer.

Each winter, Klaus moved out of the front room of his house. Through the open curtain, she could see a large table covered in white felt to resemble snow, on which a replica village of the North Pole was displayed. At night, tiny carousels spun and miniature trains zoomed around on their tracks. The cars driving past had taken to stopping and, hand-in-hand, parents and children would take a closer look. Some nights, Klaus would be outside talking to the sightseers and in years past, Aggie had helped him hand out Christmas candy.

She left her car and walked past a trio of reindeers shaped out of lights that stood in front of a large sleigh on which red and gold tinsel rippled in the breeze.

Klaus greeted her at the door. “Lunch smells good.”

“I know. That was the longest drive.”

Klaus ushered her inside to the small and cozy kitchen. Even though they were having pizza, he’d set the table with Christmas placemats, cups, and plates.

“I’m in Christmas heaven,” she said with a smile.

“I thought you’d like it.”

They tucked into their pizza and made general small talk until Klaus asked, “How’s renting out your apartment going?”

Aggie finished her mouthful of pizza before answering. She needed the extra seconds to make sure her voice would sound nothing but casual. “Good. Mason’s already paid up front for his second week. And, for whatever reason, living in a bare apartment doesn’t bother him.”

Klaus’s eyes twinkled. “Just like someone else I know, he’s a workaholic. He’d barely notice his surroundings.”

“I’m not as bad a workaholic as he is. At least I never work through a meal.”

Klaus simply looked at her.

“All right…I don’t often.”

“Of course, you don’t,” Klaus said with a grin before he continued eating his pizza.

Aggie didn’t take another bite. Instead, she stared at the Christmas bells on her plate.
